Two U.S. Navy ships – the Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Robert Smalls (CG 62) and the America-class amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli (LHA 7), along with forces from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), the 11th Amphibious Assault Squadron (PHIBRON), and the 76th Command, Task Force (CTF) – docked in Da Nang as part of routine operations in the U.S. Seventh Fleet's area of operations.

According to information from the U.S. Embassy in Vietnam, the visit underscores the two countries' commitment to a comprehensive strategic partnership, encompassing political , security, economic, and people-to-people exchanges. The most recent visit by a U.S. Navy ship to Da Nang port was in June 2023, with the presence of the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) and two Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruisers USS Antietam (CG 54) and USS Robert Smalls (CG 62).
Rear Admiral Tom Shultz, Commander of Task Force 76 – the force of which the USS Tripoli is the flagship – said: "This visit highlights the growing relationship between our two nations and militaries, helping us build understanding and trust in operations, deepen our bilateral relationship, advance our shared goals of peace, prosperity and economic security, and contribute to maintaining a free and open Indo- Pacific region."

The visit of the USS Tripoli and USS Robert Smalls brought nearly 2,300 sailors and Marines to Da Nang, providing them with an opportunity to interact with local people and experience the local culture. This was also a significant event commemorating the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the United States and Vietnam.
U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam Marc E. Knapper stated: "The visit of the USS Tripoli and USS Robert Smalls comes as we conclude our celebrations of 30 years of bilateral relations, and is a testament to the fact that the U.S.-Vietnam partnership has never been better."
It was deeply moving to witness the warm welcome that U.S. servicemen received in Da Nang, a city that holds a special place in the history of bilateral relations, and which has recently faced numerous challenges due to severe storms.
The United States has provided $1.75 million in aid to address recent natural disasters, and growing security cooperation between the two countries – including humanitarian assistance and disaster response training – has helped strengthen Vietnam's response capabilities in disaster-prone areas, as well as strengthen people-to-people ties."
