Journalism - giving wings to the Vietnamese language to fly far and wide

The press and media play a key role in making the Vietnamese language present and widely spread throughout the overseas Vietnamese community. Through news articles, reports, teaching programs and digital platforms, information on preserving, learning and using the Vietnamese language is continuously transmitted, contributing to creating social consensus and connecting overseas generations with their roots.

Creating momentum for spreading Vietnamese language

At the closing ceremony of the Vietnamese Language Honor Day 2025 on August 14, the Chairman of the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese highly appreciated the strong response of press agencies in implementing the Vietnamese Language Honor Day Project. The units actively reported, built columns, produced reports and Vietnamese language teaching programs, contributing to raising awareness and spreading the movement to the overseas Vietnamese community and the domestic public.

In just over a year, VNA has produced more than 800 multilingual news articles, 400 news photos, and nearly 80 videos reflecting the Vietnamese language movement from many continents. The news articles closely follow community activities, support policies, overseas Vietnamese associations, classes, overseas Vietnamese teachers, and initiatives to preserve the Vietnamese language by the younger generation.

VTV maintains a system of programs to support overseas Vietnamese and international friends to learn Vietnamese in an intuitive and accessible way. Rich sources of materials, combining linguistic and cultural knowledge, help Vietnamese spread naturally through images, sounds and life interactions.

The program "Hello Vietnamese" is broadcast on VTV4 and digital platforms of Vietnam Television.

The highlight is the program "Hello Vietnamese", teaching Vietnamese in a lively form with scenes, situations, songs, storytelling, poetry reading, games, nursery rhymes... The section "Learning Country" introduces Vietnamese culture through suggestive stories. Creative spaces such as adventures or the context of Vietnamese families abroad help increase imagination and interest in learning. The program is broadcast periodically for 15 minutes/week on VTV4 and digital platforms from April 3, 2023, with a dense broadcast schedule, suitable for many time zones around the world .

The program "Enjoying Vietnamese" makes its mark with short, emotional conversations with foreign characters who love Vietnamese. Each episode is about 15 minutes long, opening up sincere stories about the reasons for being attached to Vietnamese - from a song, a love of culture - history, a personal relationship to impressions from a trip . Besides sharing the journey of learning Vietnamese, the program also offers interesting Vietnamese challenges, attracting viewers at home and abroad.

VTV's digital platforms such as VTVgo and YouTube also integrate a lot of Vietnamese language learning content, forming a diverse content ecosystem, from structured programs to short talk shows, helping Vietnamese children and teenagers abroad access the Vietnamese language more conveniently.

Meanwhile, VOV has been promoting its audio strength to promote and guide the teaching and learning of Vietnamese. On VOV5 channel, the "Teaching Vietnamese" column and the multilingual news system have been a reliable source of information for many years, supporting teachers, parents and associations to update teaching methods and materials, while also providing morale to the community.

Many press agencies and other media platforms maintain regular propaganda about the Party and State’s policies and guidelines on the work of great solidarity, preserving Vietnamese culture and language. Reports, interviews, special topics, etc. vividly reflect the activities of hundreds of Vietnamese language classes, cultural events, festivals and the learning efforts of the global Vietnamese community.

The magazine Thời Đại also contributes a wealth of humanistic and insightful content through its "Learning Vietnamese" section and special features honoring the Vietnamese language. Recently, the special feature "Beloved Vietnamese" showcased the rich and meaningful activities of the Day of Honoring the Vietnamese Language; highlighted the profiles of exemplary individuals and organizations; disseminated effective models and methods for learning Vietnamese; and encouraged the use of Vietnamese in families, schools, and communities, contributing to the connection between generations of Vietnamese people abroad.

Creating social consensus for a policy of honoring the Vietnamese language

By expanding the space to reflect on the teaching and learning of Vietnamese abroad, the press not only provides information but also creates a common awareness in society about the importance of maintaining the Vietnamese language, thereby promoting consensus and support for supporting policies. Thanks to the real stories of real people and real events that are continuously reflected, the domestic public realizes that the journey to preserve the Vietnamese language is a sustainable process, requiring coordination between families, associations, schools, communities and the State, not just symbolic activities. This awareness contributes to nurturing empathy, encouraging the spirit of returning to the roots and deepening the feelings of Vietnamese people in the country towards overseas Vietnamese.

The role of the press does not stop at description. By promptly reflecting the real needs of the community - such as the lack of teachers, the need for age-appropriate curriculum, the need for online learning or the desire to connect with associations - the press becomes an important information channel to help authorities shape policies. From these observations, many practical solutions have been implemented: sending Vietnamese textbooks abroad, online training for overseas teachers, supporting facilities and connecting Vietnamese learning models between the country and the community. Thanks to that, the press contributes to forming a sustainable ecosystem to support the Vietnamese language.

In the context that the young generation of overseas Vietnamese mainly receives information through the digital environment, the press has proactively transformed: producing short videos introducing the beauty of the Vietnamese language, clips instructing basic communication, podcasts telling cultural stories, multilingual infographics, etc. These products help the Vietnamese language become closer, more vivid and more accessible, especially for children and young people - the group that decides the future of the Vietnamese language in the community. Thanks to that, the activity of Honoring the Vietnamese language is not only present in the press but also spreads deeply into the digital life of the global Vietnamese community.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the Vietnamese Language Honor Day 2025, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Thi Thu Hang emphasized the need to continue promoting communication work, raising awareness of the significance of Vietnamese language to the community, and synchronously using official media channels and social networks to spread the message "Vietnamese language - the bond connecting the Vietnamese community abroad".

In the coming time, with the coordination between the press - media, ministries and the Vietnamese community abroad, the Vietnamese language will continue to be preserved and passed on, becoming a sustainable cultural support for the global Vietnamese community.
