Speaking at a rally in Pennsylvania on December 9, Trump said he was "very sorry to have to talk about the Cambodia-Thailand conflict that just started today," while affirming that he would seek to salvage the ceasefire agreement brokered by the US in July.
When listing the wars he claimed to have helped prevent, Trump questioned, "Who else can say, 'I'll make a phone call and stop this war between two very powerful nations'?"

Meanwhile, Thailand and Cambodia continue to blame each other for the latest attacks. Thailand says it has had no exchanges with Mr. Trump and argues that negotiations should not be initiated by a third party. Spokesman Siripong Angkasakulkiat said Thailand wants Cambodia to “stop threatening and formally propose negotiations.”
Cambodia rejected the accusations, saying it was only acting in self-defense and affirming its desire for peace . An advisor to Prime Minister Hun Manet said Cambodia was “ready to negotiate at any time.”
The situation escalated when Cambodia withdrew its athletes from the SEA Games in Thailand due to security concerns. The Thai military said a BM-21 missile fired from Cambodia landed near a hospital in Surin province, forcing an evacuation. They stated that UAVs, rocket artillery, and tanks were used at multiple border points, including the area near the disputed Preah Vihear temple.
Cambodia claims Thailand used artillery and armed drones in Pursat province, fired mortars at homes in Battambang, and sent F-16s into Cambodian airspace to drop bombs near residential areas.
The July ceasefire agreement – reached after five days of fighting that left at least 48 dead – is in danger of collapsing. Thailand has suspended de-escalation measures agreed upon at the October summit, following an incident in which one of its soldiers was injured by a landmine that Thailand alleges Cambodia recently laid, an accusation Cambodia denies.
