The incident took place in the southern Cairns area. The person miraculously survived, and the incident was only revealed after an investigation by the traffic safety watchdog.
The plan to parachute a 16-person group from 4,600 meters quickly descended into chaos as the first person approached the emergency exit. Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATF) cameras captured the moment the parachute unexpectedly deployed because its handle became caught on the aircraft wing.
Immediately, the paratrooper was thrown backward, his feet hitting the fuselage, while the orange reserve parachute wrapped tightly around his tail. The strong recoil caused him to inadvertently push the cameraman, who was preparing to jump, sending him in a free fall.
The video shows the skydiver placing his hand on his helmet, appearing disoriented before hovering in mid-air. According to authorities, he used a grappling hook to cut the reserve parachute cord to free himself, then deployed his main parachute and landed safely.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau emphasizes that carrying a grappling knife – while not mandatory – can save lives in similar situations.
The aircraft's tail was severely damaged after the incident. The pilot only had partial control of the systems and had to issue an emergency signal, but ultimately managed to land safely.
