Can Tho maintains and improves the quality of communes that have achieved new rural standards.

(CLO) It is expected that by the end of 2025, Can Tho City will maintain and improve the quality of 59 out of 72 communes that have met the standards for new rural areas, reaching a rate of 81.94%; including 15 communes that have met the standards for advanced new rural areas and 2 communes that have met the standards for model new rural areas.

Following the merger, the area, population, and administrative scope of Can Tho City expanded, making it necessary to reassess the criteria for new rural areas in a serious and comprehensive manner.

The New Rural Development program has contributed to changing the face of rural areas in Can Tho.

According to the city's review, many communes that previously met the new rural standards no longer meet the new standards when their boundaries are expanded, or when socio-economic indicators are no longer suitable. Therefore, Can Tho has identified its key task for the 2021-2025 period as not only maintaining achievements but also improving and standardizing all criteria according to the new conditions.

The evaluation focuses on key criteria groups such as income, labor structure, transportation, environment, digital transformation in commune management, quality of production organization, and level of citizen satisfaction.

During the review process, the city noted that some communes faced difficulties in criteria such as transportation, rural commercial infrastructure, and waste collection. However, most localities have developed clear, phased solutions to ensure they meet the standards on schedule.

A highlight of Can Tho's new rural development program during this period is maintaining the percentage of communes meeting the standards at over 80%, a feat not all localities have achieved after mergers. Among the 59 communes that maintained the standards, many have made significant strides in their production structure, forming high-quality agricultural specialized areas such as rice, fruit trees, and vegetables, contributing to increased income for the people.

Furthermore, many communes have also taken advantage of opportunities to promote digital transformation in agricultural management, from applying pest and disease monitoring systems to implementing electronic production logs. Some localities have even applied e-commerce, connecting agricultural products to online trading platforms.

Alongside this, infrastructure investment continues to be prioritized, with rural transportation systems being upgraded to be more robust and ensure seamless connectivity. Electricity and water supply systems are also being invested in to meet standards and better serve the needs of the people.

One notable point is that the level of public satisfaction with local authorities and the new rural development program continues to remain high, reflecting consensus and trust in the implementation process.

Besides maintaining the number of communes that meet the standards, Can Tho aims to improve the quality of life in rural areas. To achieve the enhanced standards, communes must meet more stringent criteria, especially regarding average income, living environment, production organization, and technology application.

In addition to economic development, communes that have achieved advanced standards also focus on preserving traditional culture, maintaining community cultural and sports activities, and promoting the role of self-governing groups in building a civilized way of life.

Environmental protection efforts have seen many positive changes, with a significant increase in the percentage of households participating in waste sorting at source; regular collection of household waste; and the creation of flower-lined streets and bright, green, clean, and beautiful streets in many residential areas.

With a clear roadmap and strong determination, Can Tho is gradually achieving its goal of building new rural areas in a civilized, modern, and sustainable direction. Maintaining 59 communes that meet the standards, upgrading 15 communes to advanced standards, and building 2 model communes are testaments to the continuous efforts of the entire political system and the people.

In particular, in the future, Can Tho City expects that smart rural models, digital agriculture, high-quality OCOP products, and rural ecotourism will become new driving forces, contributing to improving the quality of life and bringing agriculture and rural areas into a new phase of development.
