From the night of December 12th to the end of the night of December 13th, moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected in the Northern and North Central regions of Vietnam.

The North is experiencing severe cold weather, with temperatures dropping below 5 degrees Celsius in some areas.

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting has just announced that currently (December 11th), a strong cold front in the North is moving southward. Around December 13th, the cold front will affect the Northeast region, then the North Central region, the Northwest region, and the Central region. Inland, strong northeasterly winds of force 3-4 will prevail, with coastal areas experiencing winds of force 4-5, and in some places force 6, gusting to force 7-8.

In the Northern region, the weather will turn cold from December 13th. In the mountainous and midland areas of the Northern region, it will be intensely cold from December 13th to 14th, with some high mountainous areas experiencing severe cold; some areas in the Northern delta will also experience intensely cold weather. From the night of December 13th, the North Central region will also experience cold weather. The lowest temperatures during this cold spell in the mountainous and midland areas of the Northern region will generally range from 7-10 degrees Celsius, with some high mountainous areas below 5 degrees Celsius; in the delta region, temperatures will generally range from 11-14 degrees Celsius; and in the North Central region, temperatures will generally range from 12-15 degrees Celsius.

In the Hanoi area, moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected on the night of December 12th and throughout December 13th. During thunderstorms, there is a possibility of tornadoes, lightning, hail, and strong gusts of wind. From December 13th onwards, the weather will turn cold, with some areas experiencing severe cold. The lowest temperatures during this cold spell will generally be between 12-14 degrees Celsius.

Due to the influence of a cold front combined with convergence in the upper westerly wind zone, from the night of December 12th to the end of the night of December 13th, the Northern and North Central regions will experience moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms, with some areas experiencing very heavy rain. During thunderstorms, there is a possibility of tornadoes, lightning, hail, and strong gusts of wind.

Severe cold weather, with frost in some areas, may affect livestock and poultry, as well as the growth and development of crops. Heavy rains may cause flooding in low-lying areas; flash floods on small rivers and streams, and landslides on slopes; and intense rainfall over a short period may cause flooding in urban and industrial areas. Strong winds and gusts, along with large waves at sea, may affect the operation of ships and other activities.

Heavy rain warning for the northern mountainous region.

According to the National Center for Meteorological and Hydrological Forecasting, there is currently scattered rain in the Northern and North Central regions. From the night of December 12th to the end of December 13th, the Northeast region, the western part of Phu Tho province, the eastern part of Son La province, and the eastern part of Lao Cai province will experience moderate to heavy rain and scattered thunderstorms, with some areas experiencing very heavy rain. Rainfall amounts will generally range from 30-70mm, with some areas receiving over 120mm.

On the afternoon and night of December 13th, the North Central region experienced moderate to heavy rain with rainfall amounts generally ranging from 30-60mm, and some areas receiving very heavy rain exceeding 100mm. A warning is issued regarding the risk of heavy rainfall (>100mm/3h). During thunderstorms, there is a possibility of tornadoes, lightning, hail, and strong gusts of wind.

From the night of December 12th to the end of December 13th, the Northeast region, western Phu Tho province, eastern Son La province, and eastern Lao Cai province will experience total rainfall of 30–70 mm, with some areas receiving over 120 mm. On the afternoon and night of December 13th, the North Central region will have rain with total rainfall of 30–60 mm, with some areas receiving over 100 mm.

From December 14th onwards, heavy rainfall in these areas is expected to gradually decrease.

Heavy rainfall is likely to cause flooding in low-lying areas, urban and industrial zones; flash floods on small rivers and streams, and landslides on slopes (real-time warning information on flash flood and landslide risk areas is provided online on the website of the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology).
