Prime minister Bulgarian Rosen Zhelyazkov announced the dissolution of his cabinet in a televised address on Thursday, just minutes before the Bulgarian parliament was scheduled to vote on a no-confidence motion.
The resignation comes just weeks before Bulgaria joins the eurozone on January 1, 2026. Zhelyazkov stated: "Our union met and discussed the current situation, the challenges we face, and the decisions we need to make responsibly."

Tens of thousands of Bulgarians took to the streets Wednesday night in Sofia and dozens of other towns and cities across the Black Sea nation. This was the latest in a series of protests against the euro-denominated budget draft and corruption.
Last week, Zhelyazkov's administration withdrew its 2026 budget plan, the first budget plan to be calculated in euros, due to protests.
Despite government concessions on budget plans, protests continue unabated in a country that has held seven general elections in the past four years – most recently in October 2024 – and against a backdrop of deep political and social divisions.
Bulgarian President Rumen Radev also called for the government to resign earlier this week. He, who has limited powers under the Bulgarian constitution, will ask the parties in the Bulgarian parliament to form a new government. If they are unable to do so, he may establish an interim government to run the country until new elections are held.
