On the night of May 28th, during the Russian attack on Ukraine, a drone crashed into a 10-story building in the Romanian city of Galati, sending two people to the hospital and forcing the evacuation of 70 others. It was a Russian Geran-2 drone.
Responding to this event, EU President von der Leyen wrote on X: "Russia's war has crossed yet another border. A Russian drone has violated Romanian territory and attacked a densely populated area, causing civilian casualties. On EU territory."
The head of the European Commission stressed that the EU will continue to strengthen its security and deterrence capabilities, particularly on its eastern border, and will increase pressure on Russia.
In addition, the head of the European Council, António Costa, also reacted to the event. He also expressed solidarity and full support for Romania.
He accused Russia of "escalating actions on EU territory" and called it "reckless and irresponsible."
"I strongly condemn this violation of Romanian airspace and international law. The EU has united in its efforts to increase pressure on Russia through sanctions and strengthening its defenses, particularly along our eastern borders," the head of the European Council wrote on social media.
Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Coi said that shooting down a Russian drone over a residential building in Galați met the criteria for invoking Article 4 of NATO's regulations on consultations with allies.
Romania explained that the lack of time and the constraints the military was forced to adhere to were the reasons why the Russian drone was not shot down in Galati.
