Yemen's Ansar Allah (Houthi) armed movement has released a video showing the successful interception of a US MQ-9 Reaper reconnaissance and attack drone, which was shot down by an Ansar Allah air defense team near Marib province.
As can be seen in the video, the Yemeni rebel movement's air defense team shot down the US military drone, which was flying at a relatively low altitude, after which the drone crashed to the ground.
As Business Insider has acknowledged, the MQ-9 Reaper UAV – one of the US's primary reconnaissance and attack drones – is fully capable of being shot down by even outdated Soviet air defense systems.
These types of drones have been documented to be destroyed by outdated air defense systems such as the S-75 Dvina (NATO: SA-2 Guideline) and the 2K12 Kub (NATO: SA-6 Gainful).
Since October 2023, at least 15 of these American drones have been destroyed by Houthi forces, and if we look further back to 2017, the US has lost as many as 28 MQ-9 Reapers in Yemen.
According to figures released by the Houthi rebels, the number of MQ-9 Reaper UAVs lost in various areas of Yemen is as follows: Ma'rib Province: 8; Hudaydah Province: 5; Sa'dah Province: 4; Sana'a Province: 3; Al-Jawf Province, Al-Bayda Province, Dhamar Province, Hajjah Province: 2 each.
Development of the American Reaper-class drones began in 2001. The cost of one of these drones is approximately $30 million.
Clearly, the loss of each Reaper is an enormous blow to the US, let alone nearly 30 of them, equivalent to over $800 million.
