It was unlikely that Auckland City would get a point against the 34-time German top-flight champions and six-time Champions League winners. But the match went ahead despite the New Zealanders' expected defeat.

Bayern Munich's 10-0 win over Auckland City not only set a record for the biggest margin of victory in FIFA Club World Cup history since 2021, it also reflected a serious imbalance in professional football.
Goals from Sacha Boey, Michael Olise and Coman made it 4-0 midway through the first half, with Thomas Muller and Olise adding a goal each to give Bayern Munich a massive 6-0 advantage at half-time.
Young star Jamal Musiala only came on for captain Harry Kane in the 61st minute but there was still enough time for the 22-year-old to score a hat-trick, before Muller sealed a resounding 10-0 victory in the final minute with his 250th goal for Bayern Munich.
Only the talent of goalkeeper Conor Tracey and luck prevented Auckland City from losing by a larger score. In this match, the "Gray Tigers" had 31 shots, 17 of which were on target, controlling the ball up to 72% while the representative from New Zealand only had one shot.
The disparity is not just on the pitch, it is also evident in the numbers the two teams bring to this tournament. According to the annual revenue report, Auckland City will earn just £491,700 in 2024, compared to Bayern Munich's £737 million.

Auckland City's highest paid player earns £66, while Harry Kane earns 6,000 times that (£400,000/week). On that basis, it would take Auckland City's highest paid player around 117 years to earn Kane's weekly wage.
Auckland's squad is valued at around £3.9m by Transfermarkt, while Bayern Munich's squad is valued at £769m, 193 times more.
The “Gray Tigers” own many of the world's top football stars, while Auckland City includes a primary school teacher, an insurance broker, a barber, a salesman, a car retailer and a number of students.
Notably, during the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, Auckland left-back Nathan Lobo (22 years old) will have to sit his final exams in his hotel.

FIFA's decision to expand the Club World Cup from seven to 32 teams this summer has drawn criticism from the international players' federation (FIFpro) and the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA).
The fact that Bayern Munich and Auckland City were drawn together in the same group added to the tournament's notoriety, especially after the Bavarians' 10-0 thrashing.
Many football fans have taken to FIFA’s social media pages to express their disapproval of the organisation’s approach. Sean commented: “It’s not surprising to see Bayern Munich beat a semi-professional team. This is not a game, it’s a tool for FIFA to make money.
Richard also commented: “I know Bayern Munich did not choose a strong lineup for this match, the difference was too big and made the match boring. Allowing this match to take place is an unsportsmanlike act and makes viewers feel uncomfortable.”
