| Workers have begun installing the official turf for the 2026 World Cup. |
The chosen turf is a cold-tolerant variety, grown at Desert Green Turf Farm in Washington state, after more than three years of research and evaluation by FIFA officials. SoFi Stadium—home of NFL football teams—originally uses an artificial turf surface, so it had to be renovated to meet World Cup standards.
David Graham, FIFA's senior manager in charge of stadium surfaces, said: "We have installed a temporary base layer consisting of natural grass, sand, a drainage layer, and a vacuum ventilation system. When we combine all those elements, we have the perfect formula for a perfect pitch."
According to FIFA, turf maintenance procedures vary depending on the stadium and the climate conditions of each region. However, all types of turf have been thoroughly researched to ensure consistent playing quality throughout the tournament.

Graham likened the work of the technical staff to the "silent men" behind the success of each match: These workers are like fairies. People don't see their work, but they are always the first to arrive and the last to leave. The job demands meticulous attention to detail. And spectators only get to see the pitch in its best condition when the referee blows the whistle to start the game.
"It's fantastic to see the turf finally on the pitch after all the planning, spreadsheets, and preparation that took three and a half to four years for this pitch management project." "Now we can see it with our own eyes, and watch it grow. It's a living thing, so it's really exciting," Graham shared.
