On June 25, the Group of Seven (G7) pledged to take measures to eliminate the economic gender gap by promoting women's empowerment, while acknowledging the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on gender equality.
In a joint statement issued after a meeting in Nikko City (Japan), G7 Gender Equality Ministers agreed to continue efforts to realize a society where human rights and gender equality are respected.
Care and domestic work – traditionally the preserve of women – are major obstacles to “women’s economic empowerment as they undermine their ability to work full-time or in leadership positions”, the ministers said. Technology and flexible working hours could be used as a way to correct this imbalance, they said.
