When the air pressure outside the eardrum is different from the pressure inside, most of us will experience barotrauma to the ear. This phenomenon occurs most often when going downhill, when taking off and landing in an airplane, or when driving up or down a mountain.
Most subway stations don't typically cause barotrauma to the ear because they're not deep or steep enough for the ear to experience a significant enough difference in air pressure. But taking an elevator down to the world's deepest subway station can actually clog your ears. That's because it's 116 meters underground, the equivalent of about 40 stories underground.
Hongyancun Station is located on Chongqing Metro Lines 5 and 9, between Jingwei Avenue and Shabin Road, in the Yuzhong District of Chongqing, a Chinese metropolis famous for its hilly landscape, with winding streets that go up and down and slopes dotted with houses. And it was this feature that led to the decision to create the deepest metro system in China and the world.
Hongyan Village is located on the south bank of the Jialingjiang River near Hualong Bridge on the outskirts of Chongqing. Because it is located on top of a hill, workers had to dig very deep to connect the new station to the city's subway lines.
It reportedly takes 38 minutes to climb from the platform to the ground, and is said to feel like climbing a mountain every day. The station is scheduled to be completed in 2022, after 400 days of construction work.
Because of its impressive depth, Hongyancun Station quickly became a tourist attraction in Chongqing. There are videos of people visiting the city just to go down to the bottom of Hongyancun Station via eight large escalators or modern elevators.
Interestingly, it takes 53 seconds for visitors to reach Hongyancun station by elevator and more than 10 minutes by escalator.
Before the Hongyancun station was inaugurated, the title of "world's deepest metro station" belonged to Arsenalna station of the Kyiv Metro line in Ukraine.
