Risk factors for non-communicable diseases in our country are at a high level and tend to increase, the Government said in a report on the health sector recently sent to the National Assembly in preparation for the 6th session of the legislature. According to the report signed by Minister of Health Dao Hong Lan on behalf of the Prime Minister and sent to the National Assembly, many bad living habits of the people are contributing to the high risk of non-communicable diseases.
20.8% of the Vietnamese population aged 15 and over currently smoke, including 41.1% of men and 0.6% of women. About one-third of the population has been exposed to secondhand smoke.
Nearly 2/3 of men and 1/10 of women drink alcohol. About 14.7% of people drink alcohol at a dangerous level (drinking 6 or more units of alcohol at least once in the past 30 days) and this rate is much higher in men (28.5%) than in women (1%).
About 59% of the population does not eat enough vegetables and fruits compared to the recommendation that each person should eat at least 5 servings (equivalent to 400g) per day. The proportion of the population that always or often adds salt, fish sauce or salty spices to food when cooking or while eating is 78.2%.
Meanwhile, the level of physical activity of the population is still low. Nearly 1/4 of the population lacks physical activity (not reaching the level recommended by WHO). Nearly 1/5 of the population is overweight, of which 2.1% are obese. About 44.1% of adults have high total blood cholesterol levels ≥ 5mmol/L or are currently taking medication to treat high cholesterol.
Overall, 15.3% of the population aged 40 to 69 years is at high risk of ≥ 20% of having cardiovascular events such as stroke and myocardial infarction within the next 10 years. However, only 40.8% of these high-risk people receive counseling and take medication to prevent the disease.
Mortality model data also show that the disease burden due to non-communicable diseases in our country accounts for the highest proportion, 73.66% of cases and 78.6% of deaths in 2020.
