80 years of Education for national development

Over the past 80 years, the education and training sector has made continuous efforts to overcome difficulties and innovate itself to contribute to the innovation and development of the country. It is a journey from a primitive colonial education system to an independent education system that is “completely Vietnamese”, step by step affirming itself on the world education map, striving step by step to stand shoulder to shoulder with the world powers.

In that journey, there was the joint effort, contribution, steadfast will and perseverance of the entire nation, under the leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam.

Immediately after the success of the August Revolution, the Ministry of National Education was established (August 28, 1945) with the mission of building a completely new education system, of the people, by the people and for the people.

During the period 1945-1954, the Popular Education and Cultural Supplementary Education movements were a miracle, eliminating illiteracy for millions of people and raising the people's knowledge. The school system was constantly expanded to train key human resources for the cause of "resistance and nation building".

Inheriting the achievements of the previous period, in the period 1954 - 1975, the North basically eliminated illiteracy. Tens of thousands of cadres, intellectuals, engineers, doctors, and teachers were trained both domestically and sent to socialist countries for training, becoming the key force in building the North and supporting the South. In the South, in the liberated areas, revolutionary education proved its flexibility and persistence, building a network of democratic schools, and training cadres to serve the resistance.

The most outstanding achievement of education in the period 1975 - 1986 was the successful unification of the national education system. The network of schools from kindergarten to university was maintained and expanded; success in eliminating illiteracy and improving people's knowledge. This was also the period of building a comprehensive system of educational guidelines and policies, which became the guiding principle for the sector's activities for a long time.

Since 1986, the system of policies and laws on education has been continuously improved, clearly demonstrating the viewpoint that "education and training are the top national policy". In particular, Resolution No. 29-NQ/TW dated November 4, 2013 determined to fundamentally and comprehensively innovate education and training, shifting from mainly equipping knowledge to comprehensively developing learners' qualities and capacities.

The 2018 General Education Program marks a major step forward in implementing the policy of fundamental and comprehensive innovation in education and training. Vietnam's universal education results have been recognized and highly appreciated by the international community. The network of schools has been completed; educational equity has been ensured; resources for education have been maintained at a high level. More and more higher education institutions are present in prestigious international rankings. International cooperation; application of information technology, digital transformation have been promoted...

The great contributions of the education sector have been affirmed by the Party and State leaders: "Our country has never had such a foundation as today, including the achievements and contributions of the education and training sector"; "The history of the Vietnamese revolution shows that education and training plays a particularly important role in the development miracles of the nation".

With such important contributions, the Ministry of Education and Training was honored to be awarded many noble titles: 1 Gold Star Order, 3 Ho Chi Minh Orders, 3 Independence Orders, 3 Labor Orders, 1 Fatherland Protection Order...

The Education sector is facing unprecedented opportunities.

The ceremony to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Education sector and the opening of the 2025-2026 school year is held at a time of special significance when the whole country is joyfully celebrating the 80th anniversary of the successful August Revolution and National Day September 2. This is also the time when the country is preparing to enter a new era of development - strong, prosperous, and happy.

Identifying "education and training as the top national policy, deciding the future of the nation", in recent times, the Party and State have issued and directed the implementation of many major policies and guidelines such as: 4 laws on education (Law on Teachers, Law on amending and supplementing a number of articles of the Law on Education, Law on amended Higher Education and Law on amended Vocational Education); National target program for education and training development; tuition exemption and support; organizing boarding meals; building a school system in land border communes; organizing teaching and learning 2 sessions/day...

Notably, right before the 80th anniversary of the Education sector's tradition and the opening of the new school year 2025-2026, the Politburo issued Resolution 71-NQ/TW on breakthroughs in education and training development.

The Resolution continues to demonstrate the Party's special attention to education and training; affirms that education is always an element closely linked to and decisive for the country's development; shows the consistency of the viewpoint that education and training is the top national policy, deciding the future of the nation.

This is an important political foundation to further promote the fundamental and comprehensive innovation of education and training, which was established in Resolution 29-NQ/TW in 2013 and continued to be affirmed in Conclusion No. 91-KL/TW in 2024.

With the achievements gained over the past 80 years, with the great attention and expectations of the Party and State today, the Education sector is facing unprecedented opportunities.

Therefore, the 80th anniversary of the Education sector's tradition and the opening of the 2025-2026 school year are not only to review the tradition and acknowledge the great contributions of the Education sector to the revolutionary cause of the Party and our country, but also an opportunity to arouse responsibility in the entire Education sector in particular and the whole society in response to the development requirements of the country in the new era.
