Director of the Department of Quality Management (Ministry of Education and Training) Huynh Van Chuong said that this year, 1,024,063 candidates registered to take the high school graduation exam, of which 46,670 registered to be exempted from the foreign language exam, accounting for 4.55%.
About 70% of 12th grade students at Viet Duc High School ( Hanoi ) are eligible and registered for exemption from the foreign language exam.
Thus, the number of candidates eligible for foreign language exemption is increasing rapidly, mainly using international language certificates such as IELTS. In the 2022 exam, about 35,000 students used international certificates to be exempted from foreign language exams.
In Hanoi, in 2019, about 5,000 students had foreign language certificates used to consider high school graduation recognition; in 2020, about 7,000 students; in 2021, more than 10,000 students; in 2022, more than 13,000 students and this year, 15,991 students.
Students with popular international language certificates are IELTS and are concentrated in inner-city schools in Hanoi and private schools that have increased foreign language teaching.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Nhiep, Principal of Chu Van An High School (Hanoi), said that the whole school has 543 12th graders registered to use foreign language certificates to consider high school graduation recognition, accounting for 77.4% of the school's 12th graders this year.
Mr. Nguyen Xuan Khang, Principal of Marie Curie School (Hanoi), also shared an impressive figure when this year 75% of 12th graders, including a class where 100% of students are eligible for exemption from the foreign language exam. There is a class where 25/25 students all achieved IELTS certificates of 6.5 or higher, of which 2 students achieved IELTS 8.0.
Ms. Nguyen Boi Quynh, Principal of Viet Duc High School (Hanoi), said that 502 grade 12 students of the school with international certificates in English, German, and Japanese registered for high school graduation in foreign languages in this year's high school graduation exam. Thus, about 69% of the school's students will score 10 in foreign languages when considering recognition of high school graduation.
Mr. Dam Tien Nam, Principal of Nguyen Binh Khiem Secondary and High School (Hanoi), also said that the school has more than 40% of 12th grade students registering for high school graduation exams in foreign languages with international certificates. This number is not too high, but compared to a few years ago, it has nearly doubled.
According to regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training, candidates who have one of the foreign language certificates (same or different from the foreign language they are studying at high school) that is valid until at least June 27 and achieves the minimum score for each type of certificate (for example, IELTS is 4.0) will be exempted from the foreign language exam.
When exempted from the foreign language high school graduation exam, candidates will be given 10 points in this subject to add to their high school graduation score. In case candidates do not register to use the right to be exempted from the foreign language exam, they must take the exam and be considered for high school graduation recognition like normal candidates.
