At least 6,600 people have been identified as victims of an online job scam since January 2023, according to a Singapore police announcement on September 16.
Total damage is estimated at at least SGD 96.8 million (about VND 1,722 billion).
The scammers asked their victims to take surveys before giving them fake jobs to scam them out of money (Photo: Singapore Police Force).
Specifically, the scammers lured victims by offering commissions for completing simple surveys, before pretending to deliver work.
Victims will receive messages via WhatsApp or Telegram and are then asked to promote posts on the app by clicking the like button.
Once the victims are lured by the scammers, they join a community group on the app to complete tasks with higher rewards, including boosting cryptocurrency prices or reviewing products, police said.
To complete the process, the victim will have to create an account on the scam website and transfer money to a bank account provided by the subjects. The group will guide and use many excuses to force the victim to advance a large amount of money from their own pockets.
Victims only realize they have been scammed when they find they cannot withdraw their commission or all means of communication are blocked by the subjects.
After the incident, the police recommended that people download the ScamShield app (anti-fraud protection app) and set up security features such as two-step authentication for bank accounts, social networks, etc.
