In response to the demands of the resistance war against the US for national salvation, on June 16, 1966, the Central Military Commission decided to establish the Route 9-B5 Quang Tri Front to create a new offensive direction against the enemy's strategically important areas. After becoming operational, the Route 9-B5 Front achieved many successes, contributing to disrupting the enemy's strategic position on the Southern battlefield and preventing the US imperialists' plot to expand the land war to the North.

Between June and September 1966 alone, the armed forces of the Route 9-B5 Front eliminated more than 8,700 enemy soldiers. From January to July 1968, the unit continued to eliminate 17,000 enemy soldiers, shoot down and destroy 480 aircraft, 120 military vehicles, and 65 artillery pieces; pinning down a portion of the US mobile forces at Route 9-Khe Sanh, contributing to the element of surprise in the Tet Offensive of 1968.

The 60th anniversary celebration of the establishment of the Quang Tri Front Command on Route 9-B5 was attended by nearly 200 veterans who had fought and served on the front. Despite their advanced age and declining health, many veterans from Hanoi and other localities traveled long distances to return to Quang Tri – the land where they spent their youth. Each story told offered a truthful glimpse into the war, the sacrifices made, and the camaraderie forged amidst the rain of bombs and bullets.

From unforgettable memories, the heroic tradition of the Route 9-B5 Front will continue to be preserved and spread, becoming a flame of tradition that fosters patriotism and responsibility in today's generation.
