Nguyen Huu Huan, who achieved the highest rank in the imperial examinations, was born in 1830 in Tinh Ha village, Kien Hung district, Dinh Tuong province (now My Tinh An commune, Dong Thap province). He was a patriotic Confucian scholar who led resistance against the French colonialists three times.
During his final capture, the French colonialists continued to try to entice him into becoming their collaborator, but he resolutely refused. On May 19, 1875 (corresponding to April 14, 1875 in the lunar calendar), they took him on a ship down the Bao Dinh River to his hometown for execution.

The commemoration ceremony is held solemnly every year on the 14th and 15th of the fourth lunar month. This is an occasion for leaders at all levels and people from all over to come and offer incense, demonstrating the principle of "drinking water, remembering the source" and the respect of future generations for their ancestors.

Earlier, the provincial delegation visited and offered incense and flowers in commemoration at the Monument to Valedictorian Nguyen Huu Huan in Lac Hong Park (My Tho ward) and the tomb of National Hero Au Duong Lan in Luong Hoa Lac commune.

On this occasion, My Tinh An commune also organized a festival including a traditional cake-making competition and traditional games.
