This is the latest attack in a series of incidents where bears have increasingly encroached on human habitats in Japan in recent years.
Security camera footage shows a black bear chasing an employee near the entrance to the Fukushima Steel Plant in Japan. As the young man, in his 20s, tried to escape, the bear tackled him to the ground. It then lunged inside the compound, injuring another man in his 60s.
The Fukushima City Fire Department said the bear then moved on to another company, injuring a male employee in his 60s, before attacking an elderly woman in her 80s who lived in the neighborhood.
Police and firefighters rushed to Sasakino district upon receiving an emergency call from the Fukushima Steel Plant. As of Tuesday evening (June 2), authorities had not yet captured the bear and suspected it was hiding inside a building on the plant grounds.
According to Japan's Ministry of the Environment, the number of deaths from bear attacks in the country has reached a record high of 13 out of more than 230 incidents by 2025. Currently, Japan is home to two species of bears: the Asian black bear and the brown bear – the larger species, which is usually concentrated on Hokkaido Island.
