According to CNN, the stereotype of eating alone at restaurants is gradually fading in the US, as more and more people make reservations for one person at restaurants.
On the OpenTable reservation platform, the number of single-person restaurant reservations increased 8% year-over-year as of May 31.
Additionally, an online survey in June of 2,000 participants by OpenTable also found that 60% of respondents said they dined alone between June 2023 and June 2024.
Regarding the reasons for choosing to eat alone at restaurants, some people said they like to eat alone because it is convenient, not having to prepare food or clean up at home. Others choose to eat alone to experience and explore new restaurants.
In OpenTable's survey, 68% of respondents who have eaten alone at a restaurant are Gen Z (people born between 1997-2012) and Millennials (born between 1981-1996).
People in the above two age groups are also the group of people who can easily find suitable restaurants to eat alone on social networking platforms or media.
Mr. Stephen Zagor, a consultant at Columbia Business School (USA), said the trend of eating alone also reflects major social and demographic changes in today's society.
Today, 30% of Americans live alone. The average age of marriage in the US is later than previous generations. The marriage rate has also dropped dramatically.
Besides, many people consider eating alone at a restaurant as a way to escape from busy work, and as a reward for themselves amidst the hustle and bustle of life.
In today's society, the private time for oneself is decreasing, making many people increasingly want to spend time and space for themselves. That is also another reason to explain the phenomenon of more and more people eating alone, according to a survey by the table reservation application Resy.
