Midfielder Mohammed Kudus scored the only goal in the 47th minute to help Ghana beat Comoros 1-0 in the early morning of October 13. The victory helped Ghana lead Group I with 25 points, 6 points more than second-placed Madagascar.
This means Ghana will become the 5th African team to qualify for the biggest football festival on the planet in 2026. According to statistics up to now, there are 21 teams participating in the 2026 World Cup and at least 6 more teams will win tickets this week.
Asia will determine two more spots with the crucial matches between Qatar - UAE and Saudi Arabia - Iraq. The team that wins these two matches will get a direct ticket to the 2026 World Cup.
The African qualifiers also have four places up for grabs with Senegal dominating Group B, needing only a home win over Mauritania to secure their place.
In Group C, Benin and Nigeria will face each other directly to decide the ticket to the next round. Currently, Benin is leading with 17 points, 3 points more than Nigeria. In the first leg, Nigeria lost 1-2 to Benin away, now they are determined to take revenge when welcoming their opponent at home.
Group D, Cape Verde (20 points) has a huge advantage to make history when they only need to win against the bottom team Eswatini to participate in the 2026 World Cup for the first time. Meanwhile, Cameroon (18 points) must beat Angola and hope that Cape Verde stumbles to have any hope of getting a direct ticket.
The final ticket in Group F is the competition between Ivory Coast (23 points) and Gabon (22 points). In the series of matches taking place on October 15, Ivory Coast will meet Kenya at home and Gabon will meet Burundi.
While no country in North America, Central America, or Europe is guaranteed to qualify this month, it is mathematically possible for some to do so. The four European countries that are likely to qualify this week are the UK, Portugal, Switzerland, and France.
