Using AI (artificial intelligence) to produce fake information to influence the US presidential election is no longer a concern but has become a reality. On January 22, the New Hampshire Department of Justice (USA) posted a notice about a situation where some people received a fake recording of President Joe Biden's voice asking them not to vote in the local primary election.
The recording, created using AI-powered Deepfake technology, urges voters to "save" their ballots and claims "citizens' votes will make the difference in November, not next Tuesday."

According to Bloomberg, voice-fraud detection company Pindrop Security found that the fake Biden voice was created by technology from startup ElevenLabs - an AI startup that specializes in developing artificial intelligence voice generators, using language models capable of adding human-like intonation to content based on context.
The company has thousands of pre-made AI voices for users to choose from, or create their own versions. On its website, ElevenLabs says the voices of politicians created with Deepfake technology can be used in certain situations, such as satire, caricatures, etc.
"We work hard to prevent misuse of our audio AI tools and take abuse extremely seriously," the company said in a statement. The company suspended the account shortly after discovering someone had created a fake voice clip of President Joe Biden related to the election.
Kathleen Carley, a professor of computer science at Carnegie Mellon University, said the case is just the “tip of the iceberg” when it comes to voter suppression. “It’s just a harbinger of what could happen,” Carley stressed.
