Ghibli awarded Palme d'Or lifetime achievement award

The Palme d'Or Lifetime Achievement Award given to Ghibli is the most special award ever because it is given to a group, not an individual. Throughout his filmmaking career - Hayao Miyazaki (83 years old) has led Ghibli from its early days with his late director friend Isao Takahata - but has never been awarded a Palme d'Or.

The film Grave of the Fireflies (Vietnamese title: Grave of the Fireflies ; director: Isao Takahata) is one of the most excellent works Ghibli has ever made, along with another famous work, Spirited Away ( Spirited Away ; director: Hayao Miyazaki).

According to the organizers' announcement, Cannes' award to Ghibli is essentially "awarded to creators who have created outstanding works that have never been awarded the Palme d'Or - the highest award of the festival".

And this is also the first time in the history of the Cannes Film Festival that the Palme d'Or has been awarded to a film collective. This award is like the next "sweet fruit" in Ghibli's long journey, because most recently, Hayao Miyazaki's The Boy and the Heron won the 2024 Oscar for Best Animated Film.

Ghibli was founded in 1985, under the leadership of Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata and Toshio Suzuki - veteran producer. Since its establishment, Ghibli has released a series of good films, making important contributions to the history of cinema in general and anime in particular.

Recently, Time magazine also named director Hayao Miyazaki in the top 100 most influential people in the world in 2024. His name is listed in the Icons section.

I thank the Cannes Film Festival from the bottom of my heart. 40 years ago, Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata and I founded Ghibli with the desire to produce the highest quality animated films for children and adults of all ages...".

In addition, filmmaker George Lucas, the father of the Star Wars series , was also awarded the Palme d'Or for lifetime achievement. The award will be presented during the Cannes Film Festival from May 14 to 25 in France.
