Coffee price today 5/18/2025: Sharp decline

Vietnam is now eight months into the 2025/2026 coffee crop, with the new harvest expected to begin in about four months. Vietnam has exported about 14.82 million bags in the first seven months of the crop, and it is estimated that about 80% of the coffee has been sold so far.

However, competitors such as Brazil, Indonesia and Uganda are about to enter a new robusta harvest, which will increase the global market supply, especially in the second half of this year. This situation requires the coffee industry to have a long-term development strategy, focusing on improving the quality of raw materials and promoting deep processing, instead of just depending on exporting raw coffee.

In the first four months of 2025, Vietnam's coffee exports reached only 663,000 tons, down nearly 10% compared to the same period last year. Faced with increasingly scarce supplies, the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association (Vicofa) has revised down its output forecast for the 2024-2025 crop year from 28 million bags to 26.5 million bags. This shows that the risk of coffee shortage is becoming more evident.

World coffee prices today

Coffee prices on the world market fell sharply on two exchanges:

Robusta Coffee (London):

Delivery in July 2025: Down 106 USD/ton, to 4,865 USD/ton.

Delivery September 2025: Down 100 USD/ton, to 4,860 USD/ton.

Arabica Coffee (New York):

July 2025 delivery: Down 9.35 cents/lb, to 365.65 cents/lb.

September 2025 delivery: Down 8.85 cents/lb, to 362.5 cents/lb.

In the trading session last night and early morning of May 18, coffee prices on both the London and New York exchanges plummeted. The $5,000/ton mark, once expected in May, now seems far away as the market is flooded with red.

Coffee industry experts say the decline is not surprising. This is the time when Brazil officially enters the robusta (Conilon) harvest, increasing global supply. This year, favorable weather has helped Brazil harvest faster, creating more downward pressure on international prices.

In addition, coffee prices have increased too much in recent times, 2-3 times higher than before, making downward adjustments according to the law of supply and demand inevitable, similar to many other agricultural products.
