Domestic coffee price list updated on the morning of May 22, 2025 |
Experts say the decline in coffee prices is taking place amid a combination of unfavorable factors. On the one hand, investors are taking profits after a strong rally earlier this month. On the other hand, favorable weather in Brazil and Vietnam is reinforcing expectations of improved supply, especially as the Robusta harvest in Brazil has begun.
In addition, the USD/Brazilian Real exchange rate has increased again, making this country's coffee cheaper on the international market, stimulating farmers to sell more, creating downward pressure on prices on the floor. In addition, investment funds still hold large net buying positions but are gradually reducing the scale, showing that the defensive mentality is returning before the Brazilian winter - a factor that always has the potential for unexpected weather risks.
According to experts, although Vietnam is one of the world's leading coffee exporting countries, it still mainly exports raw coffee. Expert Nguyen Quang Binh explained that it is completely normal for Vietnam to focus on exporting raw coffee, especially when international transactions are mainly conducted on trading floors using this type of commodity.
One of the major barriers preventing Vietnam from promoting deep processing is the scale of production. Currently, the country produces about 1.6 - 1.8 million tons of coffee per year, but 90% of that comes from small-scale producers, each garden producing only a few tons. Very few farms produce 100 tons or more.
Another reason why deep-processed coffee has not yet developed is that domestic consumption demand is still limited.
Vietnam's coffee exports in the first four months of 2025 reached 3.8 billion USD. With this momentum, the Vietnamese coffee industry is likely to reach the export milestone of 7 billion USD for the first time in a year, thereby continuing to affirm its leading position in the world in Robusta coffee exports.
