According to World Bank data, TSR 20 rubber prices decreased slightly by 0.2%, from 1.71 USD/kg to 1.70 USD/kg. In contrast, rubber prices traded in the Singapore/Malaysia market increased by 3.3%, from 2.13 USD/kg to 2.19 USD/kg.

In Malaysia, natural rubber production increased sharply in May, but prices remained on a downward trend, Selangor Journal reported.

Specifically, the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) said that natural rubber (NR) output in May reached 22,494 tons, a sharp increase of 24.9% compared to 18,008 tons in April. However, compared to the same period last year (25,608 tons), output decreased by 12.2%.

Statistics Department Director-General Datuk Seri Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the majority of rubber production in May came from the smallholder sector, accounting for 85.4%, while plantations accounted for 14.6%.

The country’s natural rubber inventories in May decreased by 11.4%, from 203,708 tonnes (April) to 180,569 tonnes. Of which, rubber processing factories accounted for the largest proportion with 86.1% of the total inventory, followed by rubber consuming factories (13.7%) and plantations (0.2%).

On exports, Malaysia said 35,939 tonnes of natural rubber were shipped abroad in May, almost unchanged from the previous month (35,901 tonnes).

China continued to be the top export destination for Malaysian rubber, accounting for 31.7% of total exports in May. Other important markets included Germany (15.8%), the United Arab Emirates (14%), the United States (8.1%) and India (6.6%).

Rubber exports mainly consisted of processed products such as gloves, tyres, rubber hoses and rubber threads. Gloves were the main export item, reaching RM1.04 billion in May, down 3.5% from April (RM1.07 billion).

DOSM's report shows that the average price of some rubber types in May has decreased significantly. Specifically, concentrated Latex rubber decreased by 5.2%, from 647.20 sen/kg (April) to 613.80 sen/kg. Scrap (cup latex) decreased by 5.4%, from 641.27 sen/kg to 606.67 sen/kg.

Standard Malaysian Rubber (SMR) grades also saw a price drop across the board, with declines ranging from 3.2% to 5.1%.

According to World Bank data, the price of TSR 20 (Technically Specified Rubber) decreased slightly by 0.2%, from 1.71 USD/kg to 1.70 USD/kg. In contrast, the price of rubber traded in the Singapore/Malaysia market (SGP/MYS) increased by 3.3%, from 2.13 USD/kg to 2.19 USD/kg.

In summary, amid declining inventories and stable exports, Malaysia’s natural rubber production recovered significantly in May. However, the downward trend in domestic and international rubber prices continues to pose challenges to the profitability of growers and processors, especially as global demand has yet to recover strongly.
