Many farmers whose rice crops are being harvested said that for fields where the rice has been flattened, the price for harvesting is currently 400,000 VND per hectare, while for fields where the rice is still standing, the price is 350,000 VND per hectare, an increase of 50,000 VND per hectare compared to the period before typhoon No. 3.
Besides the high cost of hiring laborers for harvesting, the yield in fields where the rice has fallen over is only between 500-600 kg/acre, a decrease of about 100 kg/acre compared to fields where the rice has not fallen over. The reason for the decrease is that during harvesting, the harvesting machines cannot harvest all the fallen rice, only cutting the part that is above ground.
Besides reduced rice yield and quality, and higher harvesting costs, the purchase price of fresh rice has also decreased by an average of 100-200 VND/kg in recent days compared to the price farmers had previously paid as a deposit to rice brokers or traders. Currently, for the Dai Thom 8 rice variety, traders are purchasing fresh rice at the field at a rate of 8,000-8,100 VND/kg.
Currently, farmers in Hau Giang province have harvested nearly 72,000 hectares out of a total of nearly 74,200 hectares of summer-autumn rice planted, with an estimated average yield of nearly 6.2 tons/ha. The unharvested summer-autumn rice crop is concentrated in Long My district. Farmers there are taking advantage of favorable weather conditions to speed up the harvesting process in order to minimize yield losses, especially in fields where the rice has been flattened.
