The Mekong Delta expands the model of rice cultivation with reduced emissions, aiming for competitively priced organic rice.
According to the Southern Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology, for the Summer-Autumn crop of 2025, the number of rice cultivation models with reduced emissions will be expanded from 4 to 10 in the Mekong Delta. This is a central government agricultural extension program, and also the first time the MRV process has been applied in rice production in collaboration with IRRI and the World Bank. Initial results show reduced input costs, stable yields, and increased profits for farmers.
Leaders of the Center for Research and Transfer of Agricultural Technological Advancements assessed the model as an important foundation contributing to the implementation of the 1 million hectare high-quality rice project, although the implementation process still faces difficulties due to its large scale and high technical requirements.
One prominent direction of transformation is the goal of bringing internationally certified organic rice to market at the same price as traditional rice. Neorice – a company developing new farming techniques – aims to commercialize USDA Organic certified rice by 2026. The company's process, based on ministerial-level technical advancements, combines natural minerals and the application of drones, and has been implemented on over 2,000 hectares.
The model demonstrates the potential for significantly reducing costs, cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 50%, and increasing farmers' income by approximately 20%. Combining fish farming with intercropping of duckweed could yield a value of 100 million VND/hectare/year. Neorice aims to expand its raw material area to 20,000 hectares by 2026, striving to build a green and sustainable rice ecosystem.
