A spokesperson for China's Ministry of Commerce stated on December 11 that China has always opposed all forms of unilateral tariff increases, and urged Mexico to promptly address unreasonable issues related to unilateralism and trade protectionism.
The statement was issued in response to press inquiries about the Mexican Congress 's approval of a proposal to increase tariffs on partners who have not signed free trade agreements. According to local media, the new tariffs are expected to take effect on January 1, 2026. The spokesperson stated that China has noted the relevant information and affirmed that it will closely monitor the implementation of Mexico's measures and continue to assess their potential impacts.
According to a representative from China's Ministry of Commerce, if implemented, these measures would seriously harm the interests of relevant trading partners, including China. However, the official also noted that the recently approved proposal included some adjustments compared to the September 2025 version, such as a reduction in proposed tariffs on certain types of auto parts, light industrial products, and textiles.
The spokesperson added that, in order to protect the interests of domestic industries, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce initiated an investigation into trade and investment barriers against Mexico at the end of September 2025 in accordance with the law, and the investigation is currently ongoing.
The official affirmed that China welcomes countries resolving economic and trade disputes through trade agreements. However, the signing of these agreements must not harm the development of global trade, nor infringe upon China's legitimate interests. The representative of the Chinese Ministry of Commerce expressed hope that Mexico would pay special attention to this issue and act cautiously.
The spokesperson emphasized that the Chinese government has always highly valued the China-Mexico economic and trade relations and actively promotes the healthy and stable development of bilateral trade and investment cooperation.
Against the backdrop of the current complex and volatile international situation, overshadowed by the shadow of trade protectionism, the spokesperson stated that China hopes Mexico will make concerted efforts from both sides to strengthen exchanges and dialogue in economic and trade fields. At the same time, both sides need to manage disagreements effectively, deepen substantive cooperation, and jointly safeguard the overall bilateral economic and trade relationship.
