Improving income from model gardens
Mr. Nguyen Van Minh's model garden in Uyen Phong village, Tuyen Hoa commune, is meticulously planned with a diverse range of crops to maximize economic efficiency. On an area of 8,000 square meters, Mr. Minh grows over 300 jackfruit trees, more than 100 coconut trees, over 100 custard apple trees, and other fruit trees such as lychee, pear, and apple.
Taking advantage of the vacant land under the fruit trees, Mr. Minh planted various kinds of vegetables, especially white amaranth, a specialty vegetable of Uyen Phong; he also built barns for raising free-range chickens and goats to increase his income.
Mr. Nguyen Van Minh said: “Previously, this entire area was a mixed garden with many different crops such as guava, jackfruit, betel nut, etc. Due to a lack of planning and production experience, the economic efficiency was not high. Since 2018, implementing the New Rural Development program, with the support of the former Tuyen Hoa district, I have planned and built a model garden with a diverse crop structure suitable to the local soil. Thanks to planting and caring for the trees according to the correct technical procedures, the garden has developed well and yielded high productivity. During the production process, I always apply organic farming methods, so the products are favored by consumers and have a stable market. Not only does it create a green, clean, and beautiful landscape, but my family earns nearly 200 million VND per year from this model garden.”

Following the initiative to create model gardens, Mr. Le Hanh Van, from Tay Truc village, Tuyen Hoa commune, took the lead in planning his over 2,000m2 mixed garden to plant fruit trees such as oranges, green pomelos, dragon fruit, and sapodilla in well-organized plots and rows. In addition, Mr. Van invested in fencing the garden, improving pathways, and installing an automatic irrigation system.
Mr. Van said: “Previously, I planted all kinds of trees in my garden, but it wasn't properly planned, so the income wasn't high. Following the local policy of restructuring crop and livestock production, in 2020, I invested in building a model garden to increase my family's income. Seeing the effectiveness of the model garden, I encouraged nearly 20 households in the former Tien Hoa commune to plan and renovate their family gardens to improve their income and contribute to the local New Rural Development program.”
Model gardens elevate the new rural development model.
Tuyen Hoa commune was established by merging the communes of Van Hoa, Tien Hoa, Chau Hoa, and Cao Quang, covering an area of over 194 square kilometers and with a population of nearly 21,500 people, distributed across 31 villages. Located in the northern mountainous region of Quang Tri province, Tuyen Hoa has a complex topography, separated by numerous hills, mountains, and streams. Recognizing that building model gardens is the foundation for developing household economies, linked to sustainable, civilized, and modern rural development, after the merger, Tuyen Hoa commune continues to focus on implementing the model garden development movement to promote household garden economies and create a green, clean, and beautiful rural landscape.
To encourage people to renovate their unproductive gardens and build model gardens, Tuyen Hoa commune has intensified its propaganda and mobilization efforts, contributing to changing people's awareness and mindset in converting inefficient crops to high-value economic crops. In addition, Tuyen Hoa commune has helped people access capital, provided scientific and technical support, and guided them in selecting crop varieties suitable to the local soil and climate.

The model gardens in Tuyen Hoa commune are rationally and scientifically planned, aesthetically pleasing, equipped with advanced irrigation systems, and apply scientific and technological advancements to production. Products from these model gardens are the result of selecting suitable crops and livestock with high economic value, meeting market demands. In reality, the model garden in Tuyen Hoa commune has contributed to increasing income, creating jobs for rural workers, improving people's lives, and simultaneously creating a new look for rural areas, bringing about a green, clean, and beautiful landscape.
The average income of households with model gardens in Tuyen Hoa commune reaches approximately 200 million VND/year, nearly five times higher than the previous model of mixed gardens, providing employment for dozens of local laborers. The goal is to support the construction of one more model new rural residential area and one model new rural garden by the end of 2026.
The Head of the Economic Department of Tuyen Hoa commune, Phan Huy Hoang, affirmed: Implementing the model garden construction movement has contributed to the increasingly modernized appearance of residential areas, ensured environmental hygiene, significantly raised people's awareness, and affirmed the role of the people as the main actors in participating in building new rural areas. The process of implementing the model garden construction has gradually changed the awareness and economic thinking of local people.
Based on the economic effectiveness of the model garden, the locality is continuing to encourage people to build model gardens in the direction of clean agriculture, contributing to increasing income, developing the economy, and achieving sustainable poverty reduction. At the same time, it is focusing on directing production development; implementing solutions to mobilize maximum resources, prioritizing the allocation of capital to villages to build model new rural residential areas and model gardens.
