The Van Pa pig breed, also known as the Quang Tri mini-pig, is raised by the Pa Ko and Bru-Van Kieu ethnic groups along the Truong Son mountain range. The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has identified it as a rare and valuable livestock genetic resource requiring conservation and propagation. Van Pa pigs have a small body weight, slow growth, but good resistance to disease, are easy to raise, and produce flavorful, firm meat that is highly sought after in the market. Due to the practice of free-range farming and a lack of investment, the number of purebred Van Pa pigs is rapidly declining and becoming crossbred, facing the risk of extinction.

In response to this situation, in 2025, the National Agricultural Extension Center and the Quang Tri Agricultural Extension Center will implement a model of "Raising indigenous pigs linked to product consumption" in Tan Lap, Lao Bao, and Truong Son communes, with 4 participating households and a scale of 40 Van Pa breed pigs per household.
During the implementation of the model, participating households strictly adhered to biosafety farming techniques amidst the complex situation of African swine fever. Thanks to the use of biological bedding and ensuring hygiene in the barns, the Van Pa pig herd grew steadily; the survival rate reached 100%; the average weight gain was 3.5 kg/pig/month; after 8 months of rearing, the weight reached 30-35 kg/pig.

According to experts from the National Agricultural Extension Center, the initial results of the model have created an important foundation for developing Van Pa pig farming towards a commercial direction, contributing to increasing people's income and affirming the brand of Quang Tri specialty in the market.
Building on the success of the demonstration models, in the 2026-2027 period, the Quang Tri Agricultural Extension Center will continue to implement four more new models in mountainous areas. The goal is to establish a bio-secure livestock farming zone, integrate Van Pa pork products into the clean food chain on the market, and serve tourism in the mountainous communes of the province.
