Can Tho hopes Japan will collaborate on research into climate-change-resistant rice varieties.
Can Tho, the driving force of the Mekong Delta region, boasts over 511,000 hectares of agricultural land, of which 319,000 hectares are rice paddies, with an annual cultivated area exceeding 700,000 hectares. The city is not only a key production area but also a nucleus for spreading sustainable agricultural models throughout the region.
At the conference promoting Japanese FDI investment in the 1 million hectare high-quality rice project, Mr. Tran Chi Hung, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Can Tho City, emphasized the importance of international cooperation in the context of agricultural transformation towards green and low-emission practices. Japan will be an important partner, bringing many development opportunities to the city.
Can Tho is committed to creating a favorable investment environment and supporting Japanese businesses in implementing projects effectively. The city will also work alongside investors in developing infrastructure to support high-quality rice production.
After three years of implementing the 1 million hectare high-quality rice project, Can Tho has helped farmers increase productivity by 0.3-0.7 tons/ha compared to traditional methods. However, data collection and management remain limited. Can Tho's agricultural sector hopes to receive support from Japan in researching climate-resilient rice varieties, aiming to build a brand of low-emission rice.
