Double efficiency from modern hybrid pig farming model in Thai Nguyen
According to the Agriculture and Environment newspaper, in the context of the livestock industry being under great pressure from epidemics, increasing production costs, along with the market's increasing demand for quality and safe products, the application of science and technology in livestock farming is an inevitable direction.
In Thai Nguyen, the project "Application of scientific and technological advances to build a model of breeding breeding pigs and commercial pigs crossbred from VCN15 (Landrace), VCN16 (Yorkshire) sows with Duroc boars" chaired by the Thai Nguyen Provincial Center for Plant Breeding, Livestock and Aquaculture has brought about practical results.
The project uses two high-yielding sow breeds VCN15 (Landrace) and VCN16 (Yorkshire) to create PS1 and PS2 parent sows with good reproductive capacity, easy to raise, and high adaptability. These sows are mated with Duroc boars - a breed that is outstanding for rapid weight gain, efficient feed conversion, delicious meat, and high lean meat ratio.
From this crossbreeding, the F1 hybrids obtained are commercial pigs with beautiful appearance, large skeleton, fast weight gain, high resistance, suitable for raising conditions in mountainous and midland areas such as Thai Nguyen.
The project has built a model of concentrated breeding parent pigs at the Center for Plant, Livestock and Aquatic Breeding of Thai Nguyen province (Hoa Thuong town, Dong Hy district), with a scale of 200 sows (including 100 PS1 and 100 PS2) mated with Duroc boars, aiming to create a herd of high-yield, good-quality commercial pigs to supply to farmers in the province.
