Gia Lai estimated damage of 1,000 billion VND due to prolonged floods

On November 20, according to a quick report from the Gia Lai Provincial Civil Defense Command, there have been 3 deaths in the province (2 in Quy Nhon Dong and 1 in Quy Nhon) due to floods; 19,200 households/71,086 people were flooded and isolated; some roads were flooded locally, causing landslides and damage to some traffic points, infrastructure works in the province, and damage to agricultural works. The initial estimated damage is up to 1,000 billion VND.

In particular, according to reports from local people, in Ia Rsai commune, there was an explosion and a crack appeared on the ground about 0.5cm wide, about 7-10m long depending on the household and when checking with a bamboo stick, it was 0.6-1.5m deep. Through preliminary inspection, it was confirmed that 3 houses had the above phenomenon, of which 1 house was the most seriously affected with a crack 1cm wide and appearing in many places over 10m long, even cracking the house's foundation. In addition, the 2-storey office building, 1-storey office building, hall, security house of the Commune Party Committee Headquarters, and the teachers' dormitory in the Chu Gu Commune Police Headquarters also had many cracks along the house, the largest crack was nearly 1cm wide.

Currently, the rain has stopped in Gia Lai province, and the water level in the rivers has begun to decrease. Important traffic routes such as National Highway 1A, 1D, and National Highway 19 have been cleared, but the traffic police force is still regulating and limiting speed to ensure safety.

According to the provincial Center for Hydrometeorology, from tonight (November 20) to the morning of November 22, the eastern region of Gia Lai province will have moderate to heavy rain, some places will have very heavy rain and thunderstorms with rainfall ranging from 50 - 150mm, some places will have over 200mm. The western region of Gia Lai province will have rain, moderate rain, some places will have heavy rain and thunderstorms with rainfall ranging from 20 - 40mm, some places will have over 50mm. Warning of the risk of heavy rain in a short time. In the next 24 hours, flood water levels on rivers in the province will fluctuate at alert level 1; in particular, the Ba River and the lower reaches of the Kon River will have water levels slowly decreasing and remaining at a high level (at alert level 2).
