Rice price today 5/21
As of May 21, the price of 5% broken rice from Vietnam remained at $397 per ton, remaining stable and maintaining its competitiveness. Although lower than Thailand’s $404 per ton, this price is still higher than the same type of rice from India and Pakistan, which only fluctuated between $382 and $387 per ton. This is a positive signal for the Vietnamese rice brand in the international market.
In China – one of the important export markets – rice import demand increased sharply in March, reaching 240,000 tons, more than double the previous month. Vietnam dominated with nearly 40% market share, equivalent to 94,900 tons, far surpassing Thailand, Myanmar, India and other countries. The majority of imports were polished rice, showing that China still prefers highly processed products.
However, the domestic Chinese market is currently in a slow consumption phase. Rice auctions at minimum purchase prices are still taking place, but the transaction rate is very low. The supply situation of old-crop rice is clearly differentiated between regions: many regions have run out of resources, while dealers are still holding on to inventory, pushing prices up. However, due to weak demand and slow purchasing speed, the market has not had any major fluctuations, even during the period of stockpiling for the Duanwu Festival.
The new rice crop in China is in the planting and growing stage, but is facing many difficulties due to the weather. Some areas have recorded local droughts such as Guangxi, while Japonica rice growing areas such as Jilin have experienced heavy rains causing minor flooding. Although the quality has not been seriously affected, the progress of planting has been affected, forcing Chinese enterprises to closely monitor the development of the crop.
