Rice prices have fallen, causing hardship for farmers!

In recent days, farmers in the eastern part of Tien Giang province have entered the peak harvesting season for the late winter-spring rice crop. However, rice prices have not shown signs of recovery, causing farmers to reduce their profits. Observations in Go Cong City show that many farmers are currently harvesting their late winter-spring rice crop. This year, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Hue's family (Thanh Nhut hamlet, Binh Xuan commune) sowed Nang Hoa 9 rice variety on 5 acres of their land.

Mr. Muoi Ba's rice field has just been harvested.

According to Ms. Hue, this season, input costs have increased, but the selling price of rice has dropped sharply, so there isn't much profit. "Traders are buying Nang Hoa 9 rice at only 6,800 VND/kg, almost the same as in previous years. Calculated over three years, each hectare of my land has lost about 2 million VND compared to the previous three seasons. Farmers would only suffer less if the price of rice increased," Ms. Hue lamented.

Meanwhile, in Go Cong Tay district, farmers have recently begun harvesting their winter-spring rice crop. This is because many households in the district did not harvest their autumn-winter rice crop, resulting in the winter-spring rice crop being sown later than in previous years.

When we arrived, Mr. Vuong Van Muoi Ba (Phu Quoi hamlet, Yen Luong commune, Go Cong Tay district) had just finished harvesting 4 acres of Dai Thom 8 rice. According to Mr. Vuong, this season's rice yield is estimated at over 8 tons/ha. However, his family couldn't be happy because the price of rice has dropped sharply.

Mr. Muoi Ba shared: “The price of Dai Thom 8 rice is currently only 6,400 VND/kg, about 600 VND/kg lower than after Tet and about 1,700 VND/kg lower than last year's winter-spring crop. This season, each hectare of rice sells for about 5 million VND, and my family will surely make a profit of about 2.5 million VND per hectare. Compared to last year, each hectare of rice field lost about 2 million VND in profit.”

Mr. Vo Minh Luan, Director of Phu Quoi Agricultural - Commercial - Service Cooperative (Yen Luong commune), said that by this time, cooperative members have almost finished harvesting the late winter-spring rice crop. This crop yielded a good harvest, but the price of rice has dropped sharply compared to previous seasons. Therefore, the profits of rice farmers have decreased significantly.

Meanwhile, in Binh Tan commune, Go Cong Tay district, this year's winter-spring crop saw Mr. Nguyen Van Hung's family sow the Dai Thom 8 rice variety on 6 acres of their rice fields. Mr. Hung shared: "This season, the rice yield reached nearly 7.5 tons/ha, not as good as last year's winter-spring crop. The reason is that when the rice was in the tillering stage, there was too much water in the fields, preventing the plants from developing fully. The rice was bought by traders at 6,500 VND/kg, much lower than last year. Therefore, the profit this season is not much."

According to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Quang, Director of Hoa Thanh General Agricultural Business Cooperative (Binh Tan commune), the current price of Dai Thom 8 and Nang Hoa 9 rice varieties in the commune is between 6,600 and 6,700 VND/kg. In recent days, members of the cooperative have entered the peak rice harvesting season, with an average yield of 7.5 - 8.5 tons/ha. With this price and yield, farmers earn an average of about 5 million VND per hectare, with a profit of 2 - 3 million VND per hectare.

"If farmers follow a cultivation process that reduces rice seeds and fertilizers, leading to lower input costs, they can increase their profits," Mr. Nguyen Thanh Quang added.

According to Mr. Huynh Van Luong, Director of Binh Nhi Rural Agricultural Service Cooperative (Binh Nhi commune, Go Cong Tay district), in recent days, members of the cooperative have entered the peak harvest season for the winter-spring rice crop and are preparing to finish, with an average yield of 7-8 tons/hectare.

Mr. Luong added: “Farmers sell rice at prices ranging from 6,800 to 7,000 VND/kg for varieties such as Dai Thom 8, Nang Hoa 9… This year's winter-spring crop, the cooperative continues to cooperate with Vinh Hien Co., Ltd. to implement the Large Field model with an area of several tens of hectares. At the same time, it implements production linkage according to Resolution 07 of the Provincial People's Council with an area of more than 30 hectares. When participating in the linkage, members sell rice at a higher price than the market price by 100-200 VND/kg.”

In reality, besides falling rice prices, the current rice consumption situation remains unfavorable. According to Mr. Nguyen Van Tung, a rice trader in Go Cong Tay district, his milling facility has been focusing on buying winter-spring rice to dry and prepare for milling in recent days. Mr. Tung shared: "After milling, the rice will be sold to traders in Go Cong City for distribution. However, since the autumn-winter harvest, rice milling has been very slow due to sluggish rice consumption."
