Durian news today 1/8/2025
Currently, durian exporting enterprises not only check the quality of products brought to the warehouse, but also proactively check the quality from the garden, tightening the process of purchasing and packaging durian.
Therefore, recently, farms that want to sell durian to businesses must proactively test for cadmium and have a certificate that it is not contaminated with this substance. When buying durian from those farms, businesses test for cadmium again, thereby limiting the risk to exported durian.
In the first 3 months of the year, Vietnam's durian exports were always at a very low level, with no month reaching 100 million USD. In April, durian exports only increased to over 100 million USD. The low level of durian exports in the first 4 months of the year has sharply reduced Vietnam's fruit and vegetable export turnover.
By May, durian exports began to show signs of recovery, reaching 204 million USD. In June, they continued to increase sharply to more than 300 million USD (nearly equal to the exports of the previous 5 months). It is estimated that in July, durian export turnover will reach between 350 million and 400 million USD. Thus, it is expected that in the first 7 months of the year, durian exports will reach more than 1 billion USD.
Exporting durian to the Chinese market has become more favorable. Now every month, the company has about 35-40 containers of fresh durian exported to China.
However, durian prices are unlikely to return to their golden age in 2023-2024. China is still the world's largest durian consumer, while supply to this market is increasing.
Previously, only Thailand and Vietnam officially exported durian to China. Currently, Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia and Laos are also participating in this market. Not to mention, even Thailand and Vietnam are increasing their planting area. Meanwhile, according to the market rules, abundant supply will lead to low prices.
Malaysia aims to export durian to exceed 355 million USD, up more than 200% after 5 yearsMalaysia's Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security expects durian exports to exceed RM1.5 billion, or about US$355 million, by 2025. The main driver is strong demand from markets such as China, Singapore, Hong Kong and Canada, especially after Malaysia signed a new phytosanitary protocol allowing fresh durian exports to China from June 2024. |
