Deputy Prime Minister requests handling of information about yellow O substance in durian

On May 20, 2025, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha requested the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to study press reports on the status of yellow O residue in durian, and proactively direct and handle it according to assigned functions and tasks.

Information from the Government Electronic Information Portal clearly states: Vietnamese durian is facing difficulties in export, not only due to quality issues but also due to the consequences of unsustainable production. While Thailand has a systematic control process, durian production in Vietnam mainly relies on farmers' experience, lacks technical disclosure and control of chemical residues such as cadmium.

China's tightening of inspections for yellow O further demonstrates the limitations of the domestic testing system, as large raw material areas have almost no qualified testing centers. The Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association warns that most durian consumed domestically is also not inspected, creating a large loophole in food safety.

Many opinions suggest that it is necessary to strictly control the production stage, build a chain of links between farmers - businesses - management agencies, aiming for the goal of "clean from the root" so that Vietnamese durian can compete sustainably in the international market.

China to open first durian processing plant in Hainan

According to Hainan Daily, China’s first durian processing plant – owned by Hainan Youqi Agricultural Company – is in the final stages of construction and is expected to begin operations in June 2025. The project is located in the Yucai Modern Agricultural Industrial Park in Sanya City, Hainan Province, covering an area of about 4 hectares, including four functional areas: a sorting workshop, a processing workshop, a dried fruit production workshop, and cold storage facilities.

Hainan Youqi currently owns 800 hectares of durian land with more than 210,000 trees, making it the largest durian producer in Hainan. The factory is also expected to produce and distribute four lines of durian products nationwide: moon cakes, ice cream, dumplings and frozen rice.

In particular, the factories will be equipped with livestream studios to support product consumption. When the factory comes into operation, it will coincide with the peak harvest season of Hainan durian, and it is expected to contribute to increasing the value of the supply chain and promoting the localization of the durian industry in China. The company also revealed plans to upgrade its infrastructure in the next phase.
