Durian from experimental to large-scale production
As for durian, China began trial cultivation on Hainan Island in 2019. By 2024, the durian cultivation area there had expanded to 2,700 hectares. In addition to Hainan, provinces such as Guangdong, Guangxi and Yunnan are also actively promoting large-scale durian cultivation.
According to the Import and Export Department ( Ministry of Industry and Trade ), the durian industry in Hainan is experiencing significant growth in the Chinese market. Hainan durian is popular because it ripens naturally, does not require long-distance transportation, has thick segments, and is sweeter and has a less pungent smell than imported durian.
The durian harvest season in Hainan typically runs from late June to early July. The main varieties grown include Monthong, Musang King, Kanyao, and a small amount of blackthorn durian. Production is expected to reach nearly 2,000 tonnes this year, a significant increase from the first crop in 2023.
The rapid growth of Hainan’s durian industry is posing a major challenge to traditional durian exporting countries such as Thailand and Vietnam. To maintain competitiveness, regulators recommend that exporters focus on improving quality and ensuring product freshness.
