Durian news today 7/29/2025
China - the market that consumes more than 85% of the global durian output each year - is rapidly expanding the area of many of Vietnam's main export fruits such as dragon fruit and durian. After about 10 years, China's dragon fruit growing area has surpassed Vietnam's.
As for durian, since 2019, China has been experimenting with growing it on Hainan Island. By 2024, the country will expand the growing area to 2,700 hectares. In addition to Hainan, provinces such as Guangdong, Guangxi, and Yunnan are also actively promoting large-scale durian cultivation.
According to the Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade), the Hainan durian industry is growing strongly in the Chinese market. Hainan durian has the advantage of natural ripening, no need for long-term transportation, thick flesh, sweeter and less smelly than imported durian.
The durian harvest season in Hainan Island typically runs from late June to early July, with the main varieties being Monthong, Musang King, Kanyao and a small amount of blackthorn durian. Durian production is expected to reach nearly 2,000 tonnes this year, several times more than the first crop in 2023.
The growth of Hainan durians poses a challenge to traditional durian exporters such as Thailand and Vietnam. To maintain their position, the regulator said exporters need to focus on improving the quality and freshness of their products.
