Increased number of COVID-19 cases in the past 3 weeks, average 20 cases/week
According to the Department of Disease Prevention, Ministry of Health, from January 1 to May 10, Thailand recorded 53,676 COVID-19 infections and 16 deaths. In Bangkok alone, the highest number of infections was 16,723, peaking in the week from April 27 to May 3 with 14,349 cases and 2 deaths.
Chon Buri (1,177 cases), Nonthaburi (866 cases) and Rayong (553 cases) provinces also recorded significant numbers of cases. From May 4 to 10, the number of new cases detected decreased to 12,453 cases. The increase in COVID-19 cases in Thailand is related to the increase of the XBB.1.16 sub-variant in the country.
Although the number of COVID-19 cases has increased recently, the Thai Ministry of Health recommends that Thai people should not be too worried, because this is a disease endemic in Thailand and most cases only have mild symptoms.
Worldwide, in the 28 days up to April 27, 25,463 COVID-19 infections were recorded (down 56.9%), with the number of deaths related to COVID-19 down 37.9% compared to the previous day. Brazil is the country with the highest number of infections in the past 28 days, with more than 7,000 cases, followed by the UK with more than 5,000 cases.
Experts say the rapid increase in COVID-19 infections in Thailand coincides with the time and incubation period after the traditional New Year, so it is likely due to large gatherings and the increase of the XBB.1.16 sub-variant.
No new COVID-19 alerts globally
The World Health Organization (WHO) said that the Omicron sub-variant XBB.1.16 has emerged since 2023, has the ability to spread quickly but there is no evidence of causing more severe symptoms. To date, there have been no new warnings for COVID-19 globally.
In Vietnam, from the beginning of 2025 to now, there have been 148 sporadic cases recorded in 27 provinces and cities, with no deaths. Of which, Ho Chi Minh City recorded 34 cases, Hanoi (19), Hai Phong (21), Bac Ninh (14), Nghe An (17), Quang Ninh (6), Bac Giang (4), Binh Duong (4), 19 other provinces and cities recorded 1 to 2 cases/province.
No concentrated outbreaks have been recorded, however there has been a slight increase in the past 3 weeks, with an average of 20 cases/week.
The Ministry of Health has assessed that COVID-19 is currently a disease circulating in Vietnam. With the high demand for communication and travel of Vietnamese people during the recent April 30 and May 1 holidays, it is possible that the number of cases in our country will increase in the coming time. However, severe cases due to variants of the COVID-19 virus may not increase.
People coming to and returning from countries with high numbers of COVID-19 cases need to proactively monitor their health
In the face of the current COVID-19 situation, the Ministry of Health said that the Ministry has proactively strengthened supervision, closely monitored the disease situation, strengthened the implementation of epidemic prevention and control measures at medical facilities and in the community; ready to admit, provide emergency care, and effectively treat infected cases, especially for high-risk groups such as pregnant women, people with underlying diseases, the elderly, etc., to prevent deaths.
In particular, to proactively prevent and combat COVID-19, the Ministry of Health continues to recommend that people wear masks in public places, on public transport, and at medical facilities; limit gatherings in crowded places (if not necessary); wash hands regularly with clean water, soap or antiseptic solution; increase physical activity, training, and proper nutrition.
If you have a fever, cough, or difficulty breathing, go immediately to the nearest medical facility for examination, monitoring, and timely treatment.
The Ministry of Health also noted that people coming to and returning from countries with high numbers of COVID-19 cases need to proactively monitor their health status to prevent disease for themselves, their families and close contacts.
The Ministry of Health will continue to coordinate with the WHO to closely monitor the COVID-19 epidemic situation in the world and propose appropriate and effective disease prevention and control measures.
