Chinese steel prices fluctuated slightly amid many updates related to the country's steel import and export situation.
Steel prices on the exchange
On the Shanghai exchange, rebar prices increased by 1.27% to 3,178 CNY/ton at 7:40 a.m. (Vietnam time) on January 14.
Over the weekend, the ex-works prices of various steel profiles in Tangshan all increased slightly by 10 yuan/ton, with actual transactions around 3,240 yuan, with angle steel and I-beams around 3,280 yuan. Similarly, steel plates also edged up around 20-40 yuan/ton to 3,210 and 3,220 yuan/ton. Steel prices are unlikely to increase much this week as domestic demand in China remains weak.
Steel consumption has slowed seasonally, reducing demand for raw materials including iron ore, analysts at Chinese consultancy Galaxy Futures said.
The global steel and iron ore market in 2025 will be under pressure from US policy, especially President Donald Trump's industry-related decisions.
In addition, experts predict that demand for iron ore in countries outside China is expected to decrease, but seaborne import volumes will remain stable thanks to support from trade policies.
Global steel consumption is forecast to fall by 0.7%, mainly due to lower demand from China and developed countries. EU steel prices continued to fall by 4%, putting many producers in a difficult situation.
In 2024, the average ore price in China is expected to fall by 10% to $110/ton. In 2025, it is expected to fall by a further 13-14% to $95/ton.
