Rebar on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) for December 2025 delivery fell 14 yuan to 2,978 yuan/t.

Iron ore futures in Asia fell to their lowest since early May, after US President Donald Trump pledged to double steel and aluminum import tariffs from 25% to 50%, effective June 4.

Futures for the steelmaking ingredient fell about 1% to below $95 a tonne, amid concerns over escalating global trade tensions. Any weakness in Chinese demand for steel products could dampen demand for iron ore.

On the Singapore Exchange, iron ore futures hit an intraday low of $94.85 a tonne – the lowest since May 2 – before recovering above $95 a tonne. Meanwhile, China’s steel and iron ore futures markets were closed for a national holiday.

Base metals prices were mixed on the London Metal Exchange (LME). Three-month copper rose 1% to $9,593.00 a tonne, while aluminium edged up 0.2% to $2,444.50 a tonne.

The decline was mainly due to the Dragon Boat Festival holiday in China, which kept major market participants, including factories and traders, on the sidelines, resulting in limited spot demand and limited trading. With no Chinese buying interest, sentiment across the spot market remained subdued.

Adding to the bearish tone, geopolitical uncertainty has increased after US President Donald Trump announced plans to double steel import tariffs from 25% to 50%. Market participants are now taking a cautious stance, awaiting clearer signals from both China’s post-holiday demand recovery and the changing global trade environment.
