Oil prices continued to fall, pressured by concerns that retaliatory tariffs expected to be announced by the United States at 20:00 GMT could exacerbate the global trade war and reduce demand for crude, Reuters reported.

Brent crude fell 32 cents, or 0.4%, to $74.17 a barrel at 14:31 GMT. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude also fell 25 cents, or 0.4%, to $70.95 a barrel. The White House confirmed on Tuesday that President Donald Trump would impose new tariffs on Wednesday, although it did not provide details on their size or scope.

Mr Trump's tariff policies could cause inflation, slow economic growth and escalate trade disputes.

“Crude oil prices have paused last month’s rally, with Brent facing some resistance above $75 a barrel, ” said Ole Hansen, head of commodity strategy at Saxo Bank. “ Attention is now shifting from the supply reductions due to sanctions to the Trump tariffs announcement and their potential negative impact on growth and demand.”

Traders will be watching for tariffs on crude oil imports, which could push up refined product prices, he added. For weeks, Mr. Trump has called April 2 “Liberation Day,” bringing new tariffs that could disrupt the global trading system.

The White House announcement is expected at 4 p.m. ET (20:00 GMT).

“The balance of risks is tilted to the downside, as weaker-than-expected tariff measures are unlikely to spur a significant rally in Brent, while stronger-than-expected measures could trigger a significant sell-off,” BMI analysts said .

Mr Trump also threatened to impose secondary tariffs on Russian oil, and on Monday he stepped up sanctions on Iran as part of the administration's "maximum pressure" campaign to cut off the country's exports.

“The market is likely to be volatile ahead of final announcements on tariffs and their scale. The threat of secondary tariffs on Russian crude continues to provide some support to prices, with more downside risk now surrounding tariff uncertainty,” said Panmure Liberum analyst Ashley Kelty .

US oil and fuel inventory data paint a mixed picture of supply and demand in the world's largest oil producer and consumer.

U.S. crude inventories rose by 6 million barrels in the week ended March 28, according to sources citing the American Petroleum Institute (API). However, gasoline inventories fell by 1.6 million barrels and distillate inventories fell by 11,000 barrels, the sources said.

Official data on US crude oil inventories from the Energy Information Administration (EIA) is due to be released later on Wednesday.
