On the morning of May 22, world crude oil prices suddenly dropped sharply after two consecutive increases. According to the update at 7:10 a.m. (Vietnam time), WTI oil was trading at 61.14 USD/barrel, down 0.18%; Brent oil was at 64.53 USD/barrel, down 0.11 USD/barrel, equivalent to a decrease of 0.09% due to fluctuations during the day.
This development caused the average oil price in May 2025 to decrease by 0.4-0.5% compared to the previous month and more than 20% lower than the same period last year. The decline came from the US oil inventory report: crude oil inventories unexpectedly increased by 1.328 million barrels, completely contrary to the expectation of a decrease of 1.85 million barrels. Gasoline and distillate inventories also increased, indicating weaker demand.
Oil prices had previously surged to $66 a barrel due to geopolitical concerns over a possible Israeli attack on Iran. However, news of a new round of nuclear talks between the US and Iran has eased tensions somewhat.
Domestically, gasoline prices remain unchanged from May 15. However, with strong fluctuations in the world market, the upcoming price adjustment (expected on the afternoon of May 22) will be difficult to predict, depending on the oil price trend in the coming days.
Currently, domestic gasoline prices are still adjusted upward from the adjustment period on May 15, with an increase of more than 400 VND/liter for gasoline products. Specifically:
E5RON92 gasoline: 19,180 VND/liter (up 403 VND)
RON95-III gasoline: 19,594 VND/liter (up 415 VND)
Diesel 0.05S: 17,228 VND/liter (up 419 VND)
Kerosene: 17,226 VND/liter (up 285 VND)
Mazut oil 180CST 3.5S: 16,160 VND/kg (up 627 VND)
During this management period, the Ministry of Industry and Trade - Ministry of Finance decided not to set aside and not to spend the Petroleum Price Stabilization Fund.
World oil prices have experienced consecutive increases over the past week due to factors such as conflicts in the Middle East, Russia-Ukraine tensions, and OPEC+ production adjustments. However, on the morning of May 22, oil prices unexpectedly fell due to higher-than-expected US crude oil inventories.
The average price of finished petroleum products in the world during the period from May 8 to 14 increased by about 2-5% depending on the type. However, with the unstable developments of oil prices in recent days, it is forecasted that domestic petroleum prices in the management period this afternoon (May 22) may increase slightly or remain unchanged, depending on the careful calculation of the management agency to stabilize market prices and support consumers.
