On the afternoon of May 22nd, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Industry and Trade jointly announced a change in retail gasoline and diesel prices. The changes will take effect from 3 PM on the same day.
The regulatory agency decided to reduce the price of E5 RON 92 and RON 95 gasoline by 60 VND/liter. After the adjustment, the maximum retail price for E5 RON 92 gasoline is 19,120 VND/liter and for RON 95 gasoline is 19,530 VND/liter.
Meanwhile, oil prices were further adjusted upwards in this price adjustment period. Specifically, diesel increased by 180 VND/liter to 17,400 VND/liter, kerosene increased by 90 VND/liter to 17,310 VND/liter; and fuel oil also increased by 350 VND/kg to 16,510 VND/kg. The inter-ministerial committee maintained its policy of not allocating or disbursing funds from the price stabilization fund.
Thus, the price of RON 95 gasoline in Vietnam has reversed its upward trend after just one price increase. Currently, the price of this fuel remains at its lowest level in the past four years, equivalent to the level in May 2021. From the beginning of the year until now, RON 95 gasoline has increased 10 times and decreased 11 times. Diesel fuel has increased 10 times, decreased 10 times, and remained unchanged once.
The fuel price stabilization fund of some key enterprises still has a large positive balance because this fund has not been used in many recent price adjustment periods. The fund balance as of the end of 2024 is over 6,072 billion VND. Compared to the end of 2023, this fund balance decreased by nearly 600 billion VND.
According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade , since the fuel price adjustment frequency was reduced to every 7 days, the price fluctuations between adjustments have been minimal, and domestic fuel prices have generally followed global price trends.
In addition, according to reports from petroleum wholesalers, the total import and domestic purchase volume in the first four months of the year was approximately 9.1 million cubic meters/tons, reaching 30.7% of the minimum allocated supply. Petroleum consumption in the past four months was approximately 8.5-8.8 million cubic meters/tons of various types of petroleum, an increase of nearly 6% compared to the same period last year; estimated inventory at the end of April was approximately 1.7-1.8 million cubic meters/tons of various types of petroleum.
In the coming period, the Ministry of Industry and Trade will continue to implement solutions to ensure the domestic supply of petroleum products. At the same time, the Ministry of Industry and Trade requires provincial Departments of Industry and Trade to monitor traders in their areas to maintain regular and continuous sales operations and sell at the listed prices.
