“Innovation comes not only from experts and scientists but also from actual workers,” said Mr. Pham Duc Nghiem, Deputy Director of the Department of Startups and Technology Enterprises, evaluating the MET technology business model at the exhibition organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology , during the launching ceremony of “The whole country competes to implement innovation and digital transformation” held on April 24.
The solution was created by a worker specializing in electricity and water with a new principle. According to conventional principles, water filtration requires a filter membrane, supporting chemicals, electricity and many integrated applications, while MET technology is a water treatment system completely using hydraulic mechanics, no electricity, no chemicals, filter cores, no adsorbent materials. This is the first technology in Vietnam to apply mechanical energy self-generated from the water flow to treat pollution.
Mr. Nghiem said that the important thing is that when applied, that principle has created a technological breakthrough, the durability of the product can last for several decades. With simple equipment and low input costs, the solution creates high efficiency and performance applications. MET technology has been patented by the Ministry of Science and Technology, and has received many awards for invention and design in Canada, Japan, Taiwan and other countries. Currently, this domestic water treatment solution is being effectively applied in many localities, especially rural and mountainous areas of Vietnam.
In Lai Vung area of Dong Thap province, where people live on fishing and seafood processing, wastewater treatment in the middle of the river is a challenge. Most households are struggling with traditional methods such as using alum or crude sand filters to deal with water pollution. Ho Nguyen Thanh Tung's family is one of the first to boldly install MET technology. The water is clearer, no longer has a fishy smell, you can wash your hands and face without worrying about irritation, and you can cook without foam. In just one month, this treatment technology has been present in every hamlet and is called by the people as a "clean solution" for brackish water fishing villages.
Urbanization, industrialization and climate change are affecting both the quality and quantity of water resources.
Urbanization, industrialization and climate change are affecting both the quality and quantity of water resources. Not only in big cities, rural water resources in Vietnam are also being seriously polluted. In some areas, groundwater pollution has occurred with heavy metal parameters such as lead, arsenic, manganese exceeding Vietnamese standards, of which arsenic is an active substance that can cause cancer. After many years of practical implementation in hundreds of projects across the country, experts have determined that MET technology is capable of treating a variety of polluted water sources, removing impurities and minerals that are harmful to human health, such as: well water contaminated with iron, manganese, ammonium, arsenic; domestic wastewater, acidic water... without the use of chemicals. The technology allows to retain beneficial micro-minerals in water, significantly reducing operating costs because it does not consume electricity, does not require filter replacement, does not generate chemical sludge, and is suitable for the operating level as well as the financial capacity of people in rural areas.
The MET technology solution is the result of creativity inspired by the competition on proving ideas in the field of innovation and response to climate change organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology and the World Bank in 2020. Up to now, this technology has not only been upgraded, perfected and applied in Vietnam but also exported to international markets such as India and some countries with the need to apply low-cost technology, creating environmentally friendly products.
In response to the actual needs of localities, the Department of Startups and Technology Enterprises recommends that this technology be prioritized for treating surface water, domestic water and wells, creating clean water for people. Then, it will support the treatment of industrial wastewater. “MET technology will continue to expand its application and development for the treatment of medical wastewater, leachate, and large-scale livestock wastewater; source treatment models for schools, hospitals, and remote medical stations; and the design of integrated processors for community clean water supply points in areas of natural disasters and floods…”, said Mr. Vu Tien Anh, Director of TA Water Treatment Technology Company.
To solve the problem of clean water quality in rural areas, there needs to be synchronous and effective solutions.
However, the difficulty in implementation is that this technology is completely new, non-traditional, different from the conventional way of treating water with chemicals, electricity, and filter cores, so in reality, support from local authorities is still limited, and there is no clear mechanism to promote application. Many places have an urgent need for clean water but lack resources and coordination mechanisms between government-business-community.
According to experts, to solve the problem of clean water quality in rural areas, there needs to be synchronous and effective solutions. In addition to promoting research on technological innovation, the application of green agriculture helps protect and reduce water pollution with a number of measures that can be implemented, such as: Replacing chemical fertilizers and chemicals with organic fertilizers and natural agricultural pesticides; implementing water-saving irrigation techniques and reusing wastewater in agriculture; growing hydroponic vegetables according to the green agricultural model...
In the coming time, the Ministry of Science and Technology will continue to support market connection programs, not only to bring Vietnamese intellectual products associated with green technology solutions to the world market but also to create a spillover effect in applying solutions to clean water problems, environmental protection and climate change response.
