"Let us unite people, because laughter is contagious," Pope Francis said, adding that he had been praying for the past 40 years to gain a sense of humor.
"While communication today often creates conflict, you know how to bring together diverse and sometimes contradictory realities to create laughter. How much we need to learn from you," Pope Francis, 87, added.
The Vatican confirmed the comedians were invited to "celebrate the beauty of human diversity" and Pope Francis "recognises the significant impact that the art of comedy has on the world of contemporary culture".

The audience with the comedians was organized by the Vatican's Ministry of Culture andEducation in collaboration with the Vatican's Dicastery for Communications.
The comedians appeared to be in high spirits and excited to be at the Vatican. Whoopi Goldberg and Louis-Dreyfus waved from the front row as the Pope entered the room.
Jimmy Fallon greeted the crowd before the Pope arrived and was asked to quickly take his seat as the Holy Father approached.
Whoopi Goldberg told Reuters last month that she had asked Pope Francis to make a cameo in Sister Act 3 , in which the actress would reprise her comedic role as a singer who hides out in a convent and then organizes a choir.
"The Holy Father said he would review his working hours," Goldberg said with a laugh.
After speaking, Pope Francis greeted each comedian, sharing laughter and jokes with some of the performers, including Chris Rock, Jimmy Fallon and Stephen Colbert, before leaving the auditorium.

The Pope arrived in Puglia, Italy, late on June 14 to attend the G7 leaders summit. He was the first Pope to speak at the G7 and discussed stronger safeguards in the wake of the explosion in artificial intelligence (AI).
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni invited the Pope to attend the conference.
The Pope had a private meeting with President Joe Biden at the summit, but it was a private, discreet event. President Joe Biden last met the Pope in October 2021.
Pope Francis also met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, G7 leaders and Algeria, Brazil, India, Kenya, Türkiye.
