Professor Bui Khanh The was the one who "laid the first bricks" for the establishment of the Faculty of Oriental Studies at Ho Chi Minh City University of Science (now the University of Social Sciences and Humanities - Ho Chi Minh City National University).

Information from the family representative of Professor Bui Khanh The on the morning of April 2, he passed away at 8:30 am on April 1, at the age of 88.
Mr. Bui Khanh The was born in 1936, originally from Binh Dinh province.
From 1945 to 1951, Bui Khanh The actively participated in revolutionary activities. Thanks to his active activities and revolutionary enthusiasm, he was admitted to the Party at the age of 17.
From 1951 to 1954, he completed his high school education at Hoa Binh High School, Binh Dinh Province. At the end of 1954, he was among the students who were gathered to the North to continue their training, and later returned to build his homeland.
In 1956, Bui Khanh The received an order to go to Hanoi to study Russian. Before graduating from the Russian class, he was given the opportunity to take the high school graduation exam and then get the Russian language certificate.
After graduating from the Russian language class in 1958, Bui Khanh The was assigned to work as an interpreter at the Trung Cuu Scal factory (Hanoi) for a short time, then was sent to Hanoi University to teach Russian to students, even though at that time he did not yet have a university degree.
Since 1959, Bui Khanh The has been a staff member of the Literature Department of Hanoi University with the main task of teaching Russian to students at the school.
Besides teaching Russian and working as an interpreter for Soviet experts, Bui Khanh The also took the opportunity to study as a full-time student. 10 years later (in 1968) with a rather special self-study process, he graduated from university.
Immediately after receiving his bachelor's degree, he became an official lecturer in the linguistics department of the Faculty of Philology, Hanoi National University.
In 1975, the country was unified and Bui Khanh The was assigned to take over universities in the South. After 6 months working in Can Tho, he was assigned to work at Ho Chi Minh City University, in charge of student affairs.
In 1977, he was appointed vice principal of Ho Chi Minh City University of Science.
With his practical knowledge and existing Russian language skills, in 1979 he joined a joint research team of Vietnamese and Soviet scientists, opening a new chapter in international research cooperation on languages in Vietnam.
After successfully defending his PhD thesis in 1981 at Hanoi University, Mr. Bui Khanh The returned to teaching linguistics at Ho Chi Minh City University.

Mr. Bui Khanh The was also the one who laid the first bricks for the establishment of the Faculty of Oriental Studies at Ho Chi Minh City University of Science in 1994.
He was recognized as associate professor in 1984 and professor in 2004.
He was awarded the title of Excellent Teacher in 1995 and the title of People's Teacher in 2000.

Many generations of Mr. Bui Khanh The's students said that he was an enthusiastic and highly responsible person. He often devotedly taught his students about their shortcomings and encouraged them to be passionate about scientific research.
Prof. Dr. Bui Khanh The is considered one of the leading linguists in Vietnam. His main research directions are contact linguistics and ethnic minority languages (ethnic languages) of Vietnam.
